The Boysville Thrift Store:
A History

Shortly after the doors of Boysville opened in 1943, a small group of women, led by Vicki Moffett, offered their services to help care for the 33 boys living at the Avenue A location. These women cooked, cleaned, washed clothing and helped with the child rearing. They provided a love and compassion for these orphaned boys.

In 1952, Mrs. R. Lee Moffett, Mrs. Kent Hunt, Mrs. E.M. Stinson, Mrs. E.B. Jones and Mrs. Gidney Talley formed the Boysville Auxiliary as an independent, non-profit corporation to continue their mission of helping the boys of Boysville.

In 1954, the Boysville Thrift Shop opened in an effort to not only raise money for the children of Boysville, but to also provide new and used clothing to the boys. The auxiliary provided special tutoring and PTA representation at the different schools. It clothed the teenagers going to college and, in some cases, helped pay the tuition.

The Boysville Thrift Store Today

Today, the Boysville Thrift Store, located at 307 W. Olmos Drive, continues its mission of providing clothes and college scholarships through the Hunter Fund, established by Mrs. J.R. Hunter. The San Antonio thrift store is still run by the Boysville Auxiliary. The Auxiliary, like Boysville, is an organization where the strength and foundation rely on love and generosity. Many unique and useful items and clothing can be found and donations are taken or picked up daily. A hidden gem, it has a well-earned reputation for being the best thrift shop in San Antonio.
